Huey

Yksi ääni iskostui lähtemättömästi mieleeni, kun katsoin uutisia Vietnamista noina kuusikymmentäluvun päivinä. Se oli helikoptereiden roottoreiden lapojen läpätys. Se oli Vietnamin sodan taustahälyä yhdessä rockin klassisten kappaleiden kanssa. Vietnamin sota oli helikopterisota, kuten dokumentissakin sanotaan.

Pehmeäkantinen kappaleeni Robert Masonin Chickenhawkista oli huonossa kunnossa jo silloin kun sen jostain kahvilasta 80-luvulla löysin, ja alamäkeä on ollut jatkokin. Kansien lisäksi puuttuvat viimeiset sivut, ja koko kirja on kosteuden käpristämää pergamenttimaista rapinaa. Mutta moneen kertaan luettu ja tällä viikolla taas.

Hueyta Vietnamissa lentäneelle Masonille Huey oli kömpelöiden koulutuskopterien jälkeen kuin Ferrari, jonka rattiin automies lopulta pääsee.

The heavy, thudding noise of the main rotors - the characteristic wop-wop-wop-sound  - was caused by their huge size, 48 feet from tip to tip, and a 21-inch chord (width). With ballast weights at each blade tip, the whirling rotor system had tremendous inertia. The IP demonstrated this inertia with a trick only a Huey could do. On the ground at normal rotor speed (330 rpm) he cut the power, picked the machine up to a four-foot hover, turned completely around, and set it back on the ground.
